Il bel rosone, che si espande dal centro come una serie di corolle floreali
concentriche, è in realtà un riuscito esempio di raffinato Neogotico
ottocentesco. Costruita nel 1856 (i lavori risultano ultimati nel 1879), la
grande chiesa ripropone i modelli gotici del Nord Europa, con una facciata
caratterizzata dall’imponente rosone centrale e un terminale elaborato a
cuspide, stretta tra due alte torri laterali, che qui svettano fino a 99 metri
d’altezza. E’ una chiesa votiva, voluta dall’arciduchessa Sofia e dall’arciduca
Massimiliano d’Austria (rispettivamente madre e fratello dell’imperatore
Francesco Giuseppe), come voto per lo scampato attentato (e nel luogo
stesso dell’attentato) subito dall’imperatore il 18 febbraio 1853, ad opera
dell’ungherese Janos Libenyi.
The beautiful rose window, which radiates from the centre with a series of concentric
floral corollas, is a wonderful 19th-century example of refined neo-Gothic style.
The big church was built in 1856 (actually it was finished in 1879) and has the
typical features of North European Gothic style: a façade with a central impressive
rose window and an elaborate spire enclosed between two side towers, as high as 99
metres. It is a votive church that Archduchess Sophia and Archduke Maximilian of
Austria (respectively mother and brother of Emperor Franz Joseph) wanted after the
unsuccessful attempt (on the very place where it happened) on the emperor’s life of
18th February 1853 by a Hungarian man named Janos Libenyi.
