Cod. 1214

Border used to trim the neckline of a feminine dress. Bobbin lace. Linen thread, “S” twist. Brussels lace, late Louis XIV style. Among the decorative motives are palm trees, branches with small inflorescences, wavy frames between the floral motives and the feathered leaves typically found in French and Flemish laces between the end of the Seventeenth and the beginning of the Eighteenth century. Simple ground with thin and irregular brides enriched by numerous picots. There is no predominance between the ground and the decoration because the proportions of the decorative elements, the spatial arrangement and the frequent use of creative stitches inside the “mat” areas of the lace make the lace itself very light. (To compare the technique and the modules of the decoration see, Santina M. Levey, Lace, A History, London,1983, fig. 254).
