Un raro rosone umbro del 1424, che riesce a fondere insieme elementi
di rinnovato classicismo e un tardo gotico raffinato. Il complesso effetto
dinamico di rotazione, del tutto nuovo rispetto alla precedente cultura
medioevale, è determinato dal fatto che ruota esterna e ruota interna della
struttura hanno andamenti contrapposti e non in asse tra loro. Citazioni
classiche di motivi floreali a foglie d’acanto sono un po’ ovunque: grandi
sulla ghiera esterna, contornata da roselline; delicate ad avvolgere i capitelli
dei pilastrini ottagonali; piccole e serrate intorno alla scultura centrale a tutto
tondo della Madonna col Bambino.
A rare Umbrian rose window dating back to 1424 that fuses neoclassic elements with
a refined late Gothic style. The complex dynamic effect of rotation, completely new if
compared with the previous medieval culture, is due to the fact that the outer wheel
seems to move towards the centre, while the inner wheel has an outward centrifugal
movement. Classic flowery patterns with acanthus leaves are everywhere: quite large
on the border with delicate rose buds which twine around the capitals of octagonal
balusters, small and close around the central sculpture of the Holy Virgin with Child.
