Cod. 50017 | ||
Horizontal, pedal-driven spinning wheel. The distaff was usually placed on the opposite side of the wheel. The pedal, introduced in Europe during the Fifteenth century, is made of wood. Before that date, the wheel was activated by a handle, although in China the pedal was already in use. In the Renaissance, for the long fibers of the wool, the “winged” spinning wheel was used, while the distaff and spindle were used for the hemp fibers. | ||
