Cod. 242

Pelerine for feminine dress. Shaped like a small cape with rounded edge. Crochet made. Mercerized cotton thread. Knotted Irish lace. Ground with brides and picots. The decoration is composed by the assembling of several different geometric figures: wheels, stars, stylized corollas united by a ground with irregular brides. This type of work, made all over Europe with similar techniques, in Ireland, England, France and in Italy, does not enable to give a reliable identification of the provenance of the lace. Irish lace or Irish crochet was born during the great famine that struck Ireland in 1846. It was initially taught in the “Adelaide Crochet School” in Cork that later became the most important centre of production of this type of lace.
